True Reform Candidate in Utah Senate Race

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
Dear Utah activists,

On Saturday, May 8, the Utah Republican Party will hold its State Nominating Convention at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. The Republican nomination for one ofUtah’s Senate seats will be up for grabs, and NumbersUSA has identified a “True Reform” Candidate in the race.

NumbersUSA DOES NOT endorse overall candidacies, however, we do tell you who has the best immigration platform.

We know most of you are not delegates at the convention, but if you know a delegate, we encourage you to share our ratings with them. We also know that voters consider many issues before making their final selection.

Cherilyn Eagar has filled out our Immigration-Reduction survey and agrees with NumbersUSA on all our positions. We have rated incumbent Senator Bob Bennettbased on his votes over the last several Congresses. We have also rated candidates Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee based on their prior statements.

Please view a side-by-side comparison of the candidates on our website…
http://www.numbersusa.com/content/elections/races/senate-election/2010-utah-senate.html

NumbersUSA is strictly non-partisan, with no preference for one party, one candidate or another, but the side-by-side comparison on our website clearly shows which candidate would do the best job on immigration issues. During the 2008 elections, lots of Democrats, Independents, Libertarians and Republicans were identified as committed to deep reductions in overall immigration.

A candidate needs to receive 60% of the votes at the convention to win the party’s nomination. Should no candidate obtain the necessary votes, the top two candidates will run against each other in a primary.

Fiscal Restraint

I am concerned that the Obama administration’s budget plan which would double our $11 trillion federal debt in five years and triple it in ten years will bankrupt our country. What is your stand on deficit spending?

  • President Obama’s $1.4 trillion federal budget deficits are unsustainable and threaten not only to severely undermine the value of our currency, but potentially to bankrupt our country and collapse the economy. I will work to drastically reduce wasteful and unnecessary deficit spending. I will also introduce and fight for passage of mandates for spending reductions to abolish the federal budget deficit and prohibit tax increases.

What is your position on the Obama stimulus bill and his nationalization of many US companies?

  • I will fight Obama’s attempt to socialize our economy starting by introducing legislation to repeal Obama’s $1.2 trillion socialist stimulus package and return all of the remaining money to either the Treasury or to the American Taxpayer. I will also support efforts to return all companies nationalized by the Obama administration to private control.

Eagar challenges Lee after his debate no-show

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Lonsberry and callers express displeasure.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, March 5, 2010.  Yesterday morning should’ve been a banner day for the Eagar or Lee senate campaigns, with one camp boasting of a clear victory in a one-on-one debate on KNRS talk radio.  This much-anticipated clash of titans, to be hosted by Bob Lonsberry, was cancelled when Mike Lee withdrew without explanation.

Lee and Eagar were invited to debate on Utah’s top conservative talk radio show, a challenge readily accepted by both.  Eagar went so far as to accommodate Lee’s schedule for March 4 during the 8:00 a.m. segment.  On Tuesday, March 2, Lee had a sudden attack of the vapors and backed out. Cleon Skousen was a pivotal figure in Cherilyn Eagar’s life,
his son-in-law now endorses her candidacy.

As a child, I remember Cleon Skousen, author of The 5,000 Year Leap. He stayed in our home in Hollywood, California, to give presentations on two of his earlier works, The Naked Communist and The Naked Capitalist, and a review of Carroll Quigley’s book Tragedy and Hope.

Skousen was pivotal in helping me frame my views of the Founders and the Constitution and I used his later books, such as The 5,000 Year Leap, to train my children in the founding of America.

Cleon Skousen has passed on, but I’m pleased to announce that his son-in-law, Glenn Kimber, has endorsed our campaign for the U.S. Senate. Dr. Kimber is president and founder of The Thomas Jefferson Center for Constitutional Studies. Here is an excerpt from his endorsement article (full text here):

“Elections that are based upon emotions rather than righteous principles will lead to the evils that all Americans should shun and fight against.

“As Americans, we must stop going to the polls to pool our mutual ignorance. We must become informed about our Constitution. We must remind ourselves of Benjamin Franklin’s wise council when he said, ‘if we shall be divided by our little partial, local interests, our projects will be confounded and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.’

“So in conclusion, let us consider ‘What is right and what is left.’ All of us need to study the inspired Founders and what they stood for. Then, we can use their Constitutional principles as the standard and measurement for those who wish to be our elected officials. Our nation’s motto, In God We Trust, can only take effect if God can trust in us.

“I have looked quite closely and with great interest, at those running for the U.S. Senate here in Utah. . . . In so doing I have determined that, in my opinion, at this time, the candidate who is closest to the Founders’ philosophy is Cherilyn Eagar.”

Glenn Kimber, The Thomas Jefferson Center
